Being overly anxious or stressed may cause your body to feel extremely tight and that could hurt your performance. Have you ever felt so tense that you couldn’t relax your muscles? Calming self-talk, certain breathing techniques, and visualizations will help you to relax your body and mind.
Here’s another strategy that will help
- If you feel very tense and your muscles feel extra tight, you can use “active relaxation”. You will actually tighten your muscles even more and then try to relax them. Clench your muscles for 3-5 seconds as tightly as you can and then fully release and relax them. You can do this one body part at a time.
- Practice doing this in any situation where you feel very stressed or anxious, and tense.
- The more you practice doing this, the quicker you’ll be able to tense, then relax your muscles in the middle of a competition, or a WOD when you want to release your muscle tension.
